内容简介:
About the book:
Vincent van Gogh s story is one of the most ironic in art history. Today, he is celebrated the world over as one of the most important painters of all time, recognized with sell-out shows, feted museums, and record prices of tens of millions of dollars at auction.Yet as he was painting the canvases that would subsequently become these sell-out modern masterpieces, van Gogh was battling not only the disinterest of his contemporary audiences but also devastating bouts of mental illness, with episodes of depression and paralyzing anxiety which would eventually claim his life in 1890, when he committed suicide shortly after his 37th birthday.
This comprehensive study of Vincent van Gogh (1853 1890) pairs a detailed monograph on his life and art with a complete catalogue of his 871 paintings.

His paintings are notable for their immediacy, their sensuous impact. They draw their powerfrom the painter's affectionate openness towards all things, towardsMan and Nature.Still, the pleasure that he takes in a veritablynaive identification with the world is continually overshadowed byprofound eschatological intuitions,by apprehensions of transienceand death. The hand that reaches out tenderly is retracted at the lastmoment because it has too often been hurt. There can be no doubt that van Gogh learnt from experience;indeed, his life precludedhim taking a straight and simple course.Yet van Gogh naturallyremained a child of his age.He grew up in a century when peoplefor the first time saw their own existence as everything, with
no transcendental support system-a century that produced many odd...
His art's ability to touch the hem of the Eternal was not the result of any determination to fit romantic images of the Artist;rather,it derived from a profound and genuine longing for the sheltered security of religious faith. He painted his works for the sake of that moment when, through devotion to the tiniest detail, the artist experiences asense of total order:the very small and the omnipotently vast could only be grasped from one and the same standpoint.
